About

Centred on Kasama Inari Shrine, this is Japan's oldest chrysanthemum festival, running since 1908. It grew out of a morning-glory display held at the shrine: to soothe people worn down by war, the head priest of the time set up a garden section at the shrine and put chrysanthemums on show. A chrysanthemum competition was added in 1913 and a chrysanthemum doll exhibition in 1948. Visitors can compare plants trained in very different ways, from upright stems and cascading forms to plants carrying a thousand flowers, along with classic varieties and bonsai chrysanthemums. During the festival the competition is held, along with other events such as yabusame, archery on horseback.
