About

Kinkengu, the guardian shrine of the Tsurugi area of Hakusan, holds this autumn festival, said to go back 800 years. A mikoshi heads the procession, followed by lion-dance troupes and tsukurimono floats. Two things to watch for are the tsukurimono, which each neighbourhood builds from scratch every year, and the staff-twirling performers who accompany the lion dance. Giant figures around 5m tall ride on the floats, towering over the crowd, and after dark the floats are lit up and take on a whole new character. With traffic restricted during the festival, public transport is recommended, for example the Hokuriku Railroad Ishikawa Line to Tsurugi Station. You can track where the mikoshi and floats are in real time by GPS.
