About
In early summer the spa towns of Kaga Onsen-kyo put irises into their baths in a prayer for health throughout the year. Yamashiro Onsen celebrates over two days. On the first, young men carry a mikoshi loaded with bales of irises through the hot spring streets with lusty shouts, and the irises are then thrown into the Kosoyu bathhouse, which fills with people praying for their families' health and safety. On the following day there is a street dance to the Yamashiro Ondo. At this time of year many inns also prepare iris baths, and the scent of the leaves is a sure sign that summer is near. At Yamanaka and Katayamazu Onsen the festival is held on the first day only.
