About

This festival honours Maeda Toshiie, founder of the Kaga domain, who entered Kanazawa Castle and laid the groundwork for the city. It has its roots in celebrations held alongside a ceremony at Oyama Shrine, and the festival as it is today counts as its first edition a commerce and industry festival organised in 1952 by the city of Kanazawa and the Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The star is the Hyakumangoku Parade, a procession in splendid period dress, in which an actor has played Lord Toshiie since 1984. Over several days the city also hosts a street dance parade, a tea gathering and torch-lit Noh, traditions long rooted in Kanazawa.
