About

Iyahime Shrine in Koda, on Notojima island in Nanao Bay, holds this fire festival. It celebrates the once-a-year meeting of Iyahiko, the god said to have created the province of Echigo, and Iyahime, the goddess he loves. After rites at the shrine, the mikoshi and kiriko lanterns large and small move to Sakiyama Square to the sound of festival music, where a pillar torch about 30 meters tall is waiting. Bearers race around it whirling hand torches, then on a signal throw them in together, and the pillar bursts into a tower of flame that seems to reach the night sky. Which way the burning pillar falls is taken as an omen of a good harvest or a good catch, and the crowd scrambles for the sacred paper wands at its top, believed to grant long life and good health. Spectators can join in with hand torches too.
