About
The summer festival of Kasuga Shrine in Iida-machi, Suzu, also goes by the name Osuzumi (Cooling) Festival. It is said to date from the start of the Kan'ei era in the Edo period, when the shrine's deities and other gods were invited out to enjoy the cool of the evening during the height of summer heat. The centrepiece is the Toroyama, a float about 16 meters tall crowned with a large doll and decorated with many tall lanterns. On the first evening a sakaki-branch mikoshi on a plain wooden cart moves through town, attended by the Toroyama and eight fully lacquered floats. After dark the floats line up on Azuma Bridge over the Wakayama River, and when fireworks go up, the lights ripple across the water in a dreamlike scene. The work song kyaarage, heard throughout the town, adds to the mood.
