About

The spring festival of Ojinushi Shrine (also called Sanno Shrine) in Nanao is the grandest on the Noto Peninsula, named after the rite of offering food to the gods on fresh green oak leaves. Its stars are three dekayama floats, one each from Kajimachi, Fuchumachi and Uomachi, said to be the largest in Japan at 12 meters tall and 20 tons, rolling on wheels 2 meters across. The moment a crew forces one of these giants to change direction, wheels groaning, is the scene not to miss. The float procession is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is also on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Visitors are sometimes allowed to lend a hand with the ropes.
