About
Sakatare Shrine and Hakusan Shrine in Ushitsu, Noto Town, hold this spring festival together. Two big floats, each about 6 m tall and 8 m long and decorated with dolls, are hauled through the streets to drums, gongs and the chanting of work songs. The moment to watch for is kadomawashi, when a float is swung round in one go at a crossroads or in a narrow lane. The floats go out three times: an evening run on the first day, an early-morning run the next day, and the main run. The tradition is said to go back some 470 years, to a priest of Hakusan Shrine from a branch of the Hatakeyama family, lords of Nanao Castle, and it is counted among the float festivals that brighten spring on Noto.
