About
This rain-prayer nenbutsu dance from Nakato in Manno is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagawa Prefecture, and unlike other nenbutsu dances in the prefecture it is danced by children. It is now held on the Sunday closest to June 14 on the old lunar calendar (which used to be its fixed date), beginning at Okawa Shrine, climbing to the Akiba Gongen and Ryuo shrines on the summit, then coming down to perform at Nakato Hachiman Shrine, the Ryuo shrine in Shinsei and Amagawa Shrine. According to legend, in a great drought of the Tenpyo era the governor of Sanuki prayed for rain at Okawa Shrine; a white snake emerged from the pond before the shrine, became a dragon, climbed to the sky and sent down heavy rain, and the delighted people danced to the beat of gongs.
