About
On a winter Sunday, Oji Shrine on Hitsuishijima, an island at the northern edge of Sakaide's waters right beneath the Seto Ohashi Bridge, holds this archery festival, an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagawa Prefecture. Look closely at the target: a square drawn on plain white paper, a design rarely seen elsewhere. When the shooting is over, the archers walk through the village chanting Buddhist mantras, a circuit believed to chase misfortune out of the community. It usually falls on a Sunday between mid- and late January; enquiries go to the Cultural Promotion Division of the Sakaide City Board of Education.
