About
Seppe Tobe is a rice-planting festival held at Hioki Hachiman Shrine and Yoshitoshi Onimaru Shrine in the Hiyoshi area of Hioki. Young men in white step into the paddy, link shoulders in a ring, and jump as high as they can while drinking sake and singing, and before long they are caked in mud. The name means "jump with all your might"; the stamping is said to knead the soil and crush pests, all in the hope of a good harvest. At Hioki Hachiman Shrine a huge masked deity called Deodon watches over the rites in the field, and local people and children's groups dedicate stick dances and komuso dances. The festival is said to date from 1595, and the whole town is busy all day.
