About
This drum dance from the Osato district of Ichikikushikino is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Today the drum dance is the main event, performed for about an hour at each of two spots: Horinouchi-niwa near the Nakafukura community hall, and Haraiyama beside Route 270. It used to be held on a Sunday in early August, with figures of deer, tigers, oxen and cranes and processions of daimyo, Ryukyu kings and halberd bearers. The dance is said to have begun about 400 years ago to praise Lord Shimazu Yoshihiro's deeds in the Korean campaigns, and was later revived to celebrate an irrigation channel that brought water to Osato's rice fields. Bound by strict rules, it has carried on for about 300 years.
