About
Kagoshima Jingu Shrine in the Hayato district of Kirishima holds this procession just once a year. The highlight is a line of about 1,000 people, including warriors in armor, escorting a mikoshi through the parish to pray for household safety and local prosperity. On the day before the third Sunday of October, the procession goes down from the shrine to the Hamanoichi resting place, where festival stalls are set up; on the third Sunday it climbs back to the shrine. Hamanoichi, near Hayato fishing port, is where the shrine's deity Hikohohodemi (Yamasachihiko) is said to have returned from the realm of the sea. The rite is thought to have started when the Hayato Mound was built to calm the spirits of the Hayato people.
