About

Ohara Matsuri, the biggest festival in southern Kyushu, takes over the Tenmonkan area of Kagoshima City every November 2 and 3. The thing to see is the so-odori, in which about 18,000 dancers move down the street to Ohara-bushi, Kagoshima Hanya-bushi and Shibuya Ondo, each troupe in its own bright matching costume. The route is about 1,480 m of tram street running from Takamibaba through Izuro to Sambashi-dori. The night festival on November 2 adds drum contests by ogojo, as Satsuma women are called locally, and the main festival on November 3 brings marching bands and the Ohara 21 dance. Until the day before, an illuminated flower tram rolls through the city.
