About

This fire festival at the sacred ground of the old shrine site at Takachiho-gawara in Kirishima begins around 17:00 as night comes on. A sacred flame struck from wood is passed to a tall stack of firewood, and as it roars up, priests recite the great purification prayer. Prayer tablets and ema plaques holding worshippers' wishes are fed to the fire with prayers for peace in the country and people's happiness, while a ceremony takes place on the summit of Mt. Takachiho at the same time. It recalls the story that a fire was lit to light the way for Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the deity of Kirishima Jingu, as he came down from heaven. Afterwards there are Kirishima Kumen drums and Kirishima kagura, and sacred sake and rice cakes are handed out. Attendance is free.
