About

In Sata, at the southern tip of mainland Japan, Minamiosumi stages a two-day festival in which one goddess pays a New Year call on her sister. The younger deity of Misaki Shrine, near Cape Sata, sets out at dawn after a rite in which she is transferred into a sacred branch called misaki-shiba, and her portable shrine is handed on through seven hamlets, the Nanaura, over a route of about 20 km toward the elder sister at Chikatsumiya Shrine. Every hamlet holds its own prayers for good health, harvests and fishing. A dramatic moment on day one is the descent of a steep slope in Sakamoto to flutes and drums. Day two peaks at Chikatsumiya Shrine with a planting rite and sacred dances. The festival is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagoshima Prefecture.
