About
Over 2 days each spring, two shrines in the Anraku district of Shibushi, Yamamiya Shrine and Yasura Shrine, pray for a good harvest in a festival designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagoshima Prefecture. On day one, Yamamiya's portable shrine travels to Yasura; on day two, after a rite there foretells the year's crop, it returns home. At Yamamiya, bamboo skewers stand in for rice seedlings as they are planted in the grounds, and a procession heads down to the shore. At Yasura there is kabihiki, a rite deciding the harvest and the catch, and young men in striking black costumes perform the nine Shogatsu Odori dances. The grounds then turn into a pretend paddy for a run of rice-farming rites: tilling, a performer in a bull mask working the field, and sowing the seed.
