About
Over Golden Week, Minamisatsuma fills its town center with sculptures made from the sand of Fukiagehama, one of the three great sand dune areas of Japan. In recent years the works have been set out around the city hall, so the fun is in wandering the streets from one piece to the next. The 2026 edition took castles as its theme under the title "Sand Stroll: Castle Stories Made of Sand," with renowned historic fortresses alongside dreamlike storybook castles. Residents run the whole event themselves, with the idea of creating a place where people and nature fit together, and it is meant for visitors of every age.
