About
Every December 16, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu marks the anniversary of its deity being enshrined where the shrine stands today. After an evening ceremony at the main sanctuary, bonfires are lit in the north garden of the dance pavilion, and in their glow the shrine performs sacred kagura based on a reconstruction of the 'Miyabito' song sung at the original rite, followed by the Ninjo-no-Mai court dance. This kagura is said to date from the shrine's founding more than 800 years ago. Minamoto no Yoriyoshi first invited the Hachiman deity here from Iwashimizu Hachimangu, and his descendant Minamoto no Yoritomo moved the shrine to its current site; after fire destroyed it, Yoritomo rebuilt it right away and attended the 1191 rededication in formal dress. December 16 is that date converted to the modern calendar.
