About
A local spring festival on Iwa Beach in Manazuru with ties to Minamoto no Yoritomo. The main draw is the Yoritomo Hataage hotpot, cooked in a giant pot 9.3 meters around and served free to everyone who comes. It recalls 1180, when Yoritomo, beaten at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, escaped to this area and was fed with seafood by the people of the beach before sailing for Awa Province, today's southern Chiba; the cooking also serves as a disaster-relief food drill. A samurai armor troupe and food trucks add to the day, and fireworks close the evening. The town's earlier Yoritomo festival stopped after 1997, and a volunteer group of residents brought it back in 2025.
