About
Tosa Shrine in Kochi City, the foremost shrine of old Tosa Province and known to locals simply as Shinane-sama, holds its great summer festival every year on August 24 and 25. For centuries the shrine has been a spiritual anchor for the people of Kochi. Its deity, Ajisukitakahikone-no-kami, also called Hitokotonushi-no-kami, is tied to the spade and the opening of new land, and people come to pray for good luck. Some 300 meters of approach lined with big trees lead through grounds of roughly 33,000 square meters to the main hall, rebuilt by the warlord Chosokabe Motochika and now a National Important Cultural Property; its rare iri-tombo, or dragonfly, style of construction draws interest from architecture lovers. Street stalls appear only on the 24th, not on the 25th.
