About
Every summer, Tosashimizu throws a festival for the whole city, wishing for prosperity and growing local industry. Taiko drumming opens the proceedings, then teams dance the Ashizuri Odori through the Chuo-cho shopping street. The classic version is set to the Ashizuri Ondo, a song local volunteers wrote to celebrate the city's founding, and its movements are said to show the rough waves of the Pacific; a newer tune is easier for younger dancers to pick up. There are food stalls and a treasure hunt, and after dark fireworks open directly overhead near Shimizu Port. Light rain does not stop the festival, but stormy weather postpones it.
