About
Every February 11, National Foundation Day, Akiba Shrine in the Betsue area of Niyodogawa Town holds a festival counted among the three great festivals of Tosa. The shrine honors Hobusuna-no-Mikoto and has long been worshipped for protection from fire. Performers gather from the hamlets of Honmura, Kirinokubo and Sawatari to the call of conch shells, and with the mikoshi bearers they form a procession of about 200 people, led by a long-nosed mask and backed by flutes, drums and gongs. Setting out from Iwaya Shrine, they call at the Ichikawa house, Hosenji Temple and the Nakagoshi house, covering some 3 km of mountain road at an unhurried pace from morning until evening before arriving at Akiba Shrine. The must-sees are the sword dances and torige-hineri, where tall feathered poles are flung high and caught on the narrow lanes.
