About

Deep in the night of the fourteenth day of the first lunar month, the Nomi district of Susaki City holds this Little New Year rite, designated an intangible folk cultural property of Kochi Prefecture. Also called Yoshio, the Dragon God Festival or the Sea God Festival, it prays for a safe community and good fishing, and one account holds that it once prayed for the Yamauchi lords' safe voyages on their journeys to Edo. Local young men push the shiobakari pole along the Nomi seawall from east to west, jabbing its base into the ground, decorated at each crossroads along the way, as elders sing work songs and boat songs. At low tide late at night they light lanterns and tie the pole to a weeping willow on the beach at the far west end. When it later falls, the direction tells the year: seaward means a good catch, landward a good harvest.
