About

Matsubayashi is one of the oldest performing arts in Kikuchi and a national cultural property, kept alive by the Omatsubayashi Ono Preservation Society. You can see it every October 13, during the autumn festival of Kikuchi Shrine, at the Kikuchi Matsubayashi Noh Stage across from Kikuchi High School. A record of its origins written in 1757 traces it to the Nanboku-cho period, in the time of Takemitsu, 15th head of the Kikuchi clan, when it was performed at Moriyama Castle, now Kikuchi Shrine, to celebrate the New Year for Prince Kanenaga, sent from the capital as general pacifying the west. The cast is one dancer, a percussion section of two large hand drums and one stick drum, jikata musicians and one assistant. Its old-style movements and plain chanting give a rare window onto how Noh evolved, and it is part of a Japan Heritage story.
