About
Each early summer, Minamata has its busiest day of the year with Renryusai. It started in 1956 as the Minamata Port Festival, marking the port's designation as a trade port, and was later renamed by combining Koiji Island, just offshore, and Mount Tatsuyama, which looks down over the town. Residents celebrate the once-a-year meeting of the sea god and the mountain god and pray for thriving farms, forests and fisheries and a growing town. Since 2022 it has run together with the Minamata Port Festival, with purification using mountain water and sea water, Shinto rites, a citywide group dance, a parade with mikoshi and children, stage shows and a local products fair. At the port you can ride along on patrol and fisheries vessels or tour ships, and fireworks fill the night. Both the name and the season have shifted several times over the years.
