About
When the irises reach their peak, the Takase Urakawa Waterside Green Space in Tamana holds an early-summer festival. From about mid-May to early June, roughly 6,000 iris plants flower in purple and white along about 700 meters of the canal. The banks still keep the stone bridges, stone walls and boat landings of Takase's days as a merchant and port town, and a boardwalk follows the water. The festival lasts around two weeks while the flowers are out, with evening illumination and assorted events in the green space and nearby shopping streets. Walk the Edo-era waterside by day for the colors, then come back after dark for the lights.
