About

Takamori's summer festival prays for the strong winds to calm down and for a good harvest. Said to be over 270 years old, it is believed to have been started by the town's merchants to thank local farmers. It opens in the middle of the first night: firecrackers go off and each neighborhood group parades in inventive costumes for the mezamashi wake-up. That morning a harvest rite takes place at Takamori Aso Shrine, and from evening the Takamori niwaka, funny skits in the local dialect, pop up all over town; the national government has selected them as an intangible folk cultural property to be documented. Day two brings the yamahiki, when tsukurimono figures built from everyday objects to look like something else are pulled around town, plus a niwaka contest, and about 2,000 fireworks close the night.
