About
Miyama's Kayabuki no Sato, a village in Nantan where 39 thatched-roof houses still stand and people still live in them, glows with lanterns for a few winter nights each year. Lanterns line the lanes and about 20 of the thatched farmhouses are lit up, creating a dreamlike scene quite unlike the village by day. It is the only time of year the village is illuminated (in 2027, eight nights from 17:00 to 19:00). Food stalls serve local food, and at Chii Hachiman Shrine you can try pounding rice cakes and enjoy sweet red-bean zenzai; in 2027 a traditional Japanese dance is also offered at the shrine on February 3. To avoid disrupting residents' lives, event parking is by advance reservation only and there is no other parking nearby. You can also get there by JR train and Nantan city bus.
