About
Held at Sanjusangendo, the Omato national archery contest is named after toshiya, an Edo-period archery tradition. Around two thousand participants from across Japan take part, and the sight of young people who have just come of age competing in colorful kimono makes it one of Kyoto's best-loved winter scenes. It is held on the same day as the temple's Yanagi no Okaji blessing, and the grounds are open free of charge, so the temple is lively all day. There is no parking; walk from Kyoto Station or Keihan Shichijo Station, or take a city bus.
