About
Held every year at Agata Shrine in Uji from June 5 into the early hours of June 6, this festival is known as the "mysterious festival of darkness." Late at night, all the lights along the streets are switched off and the bonten is carried in procession through the pitch-dark town. It is one of Uji's signature festivals and now draws more than 100,000 people, with long rows of street stalls, making it the largest festival in the area. Traffic restrictions are in place on the day. The nearest stations are Keihan Uji and JR Uji.
