About
Fireworks dedicated to Ise Jingu soar from the banks of the Miyagawa River in Ise. The contest began in 1953 to mark that year's Shikinen Sengu, the periodic rebuilding of the shrine, and ranks with Omagari in Akita and Tsuchiura in Ibaraki as one of Japan's three great fireworks competitions. Pyrotechnicians from across the country compete in 2 categories, aerial shells and starmines. Because it falls early in the season, it is also a chance for the makers to pray for a safe year. A starmine opens the show, the competition entries follow, and a wide starmine brings the finale. There are paid seats and free areas, and it goes ahead in rain. Parking is banned around the venue, so take the temporary bus from JR/Kintetsu Iseshi Station, or walk from JR Yamada-Kamiguchi or Kintetsu Miyamachi Station.
