About
On the island of Sugashima, off Toba Port, ama divers race each other in a summer festival held at Shirongo Beach and Shirahige Shrine. When the conch horn sounds, the ama, in their diving clothes, plunge into the sea together to see who can first come up with a mated pair of abalone, one female and one male. The first pair is offered at the shrine with prayers for good fishing and safety at sea. Sugashima is about 15 minutes by city ferry from Toba Marine Terminal, and from the island's port it is a roughly 20-minute walk along the Shirongo trail to the venue. Drivers should park at the paid Satahama lot on the mainland and take the ferry.
