About
Shichiri-mihama Beach on the Kumano Sea is the stage for the biggest summer fireworks along the Kumano roads, with about 10,000 shells. Its roots are said to lie in simple fireworks lit at Obon for the newly departed, whose sparks were used to burn lanterns, and the tradition is more than 300 years old. The signature acts are the kaijo jibaku, where lit shells are thrown from boats one after another to burst on the sea; the great set piece staged on the rocks and caves of Onigajo; and a giant three-shaku shell exploding on the water. Blasts and shock waves mix with echoes off the cliffs and booms inside the caves for an overwhelming effect. The beach is about 5 minutes on foot from JR Kumanoshi Station. It gets extremely crowded, and the show moves to a reserve date in stormy weather or high waves.
