About

This summer float festival fills Baba-dori street in Iwagasaki in the Kurikoma district of Kurihara. It runs over two days: an eve festival followed by the main festival. The first day opens with a Shinto rite and opening ceremony, then brings an aerial display by F-2 aircraft of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's 4th Air Wing, festival music, local folk performing arts, a children's mikoshi and a lively mass dance of portable shrines. After dark, the floats parade down the street in a night procession. The main festival begins in the morning with all the musicians playing together, followed by the announcement of the mayor's prize and a parade of the floats through town — a lively taste of summer in Kurikoma.
