About
Over two days during Obon, on August 15 and 16, this summer festival is held in Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Great Views. It began in 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake. At its heart are Obon traditions: memorial rites for ancestors, floating lanterns on the water and bon dancing. It is a chance for residents and visitors of all generations to share the summer charms of Matsushima and a way of life rooted in its scenery, history and temple-town culture. On August 16, Zuiganji Temple also holds its Daisegaki memorial service.
