About
"Osubade" is local dialect for snacks to go with drinks, and this year-end market is the place to stock up on them. Seafood from Shizugawa Bay, a Ramsar-listed wetland, and other Minamisanriku specialties are sold at bargain prices, drawing long lines at the Shizugawa fish market before dawn. Look for the town's famous octopus, praised as "Akashi in the west, Shizugawa in the east," along with oysters, scallops and seaweed, plus rice cakes, New Year fish cakes and local produce. A delivery booth lets you ship purchases on the spot, and food stalls serve hot dishes such as handmade soba and seafood soup.
