About
Each spring, as the cherry trees come into bloom in early April, the town of Ogawara holds a festival along the banks of the Shiroishi River, where the blossoms form the famous Hitome Senbon Zakura, 'a thousand cherry trees at a single glance'. The trees are a source of local pride, cared for by high school students, the Lions Club and a cherry blossom society, and townspeople turn out to clean the riverbank before the festival begins. The venue, Shiroishi River Park, is about a three-minute walk from JR Ogawara Station. During the festival you can buy special hanami bento boxes sold only at this time of year, browse the local produce shop and food stalls, catch stage events, and after dark stroll beneath blossoms lit up by LED lights.
