About
For one weekend each September, about 40 street corners across central Sendai, led by the zelkova-lined Jozenji-dori Avenue, turn into stages for this citizen-run music festival. It is mostly free and outdoors, with performances in building entrances, shopping streets, parks and small plazas. Despite the name, "Streetjazz" isn't limited to jazz: organizers use it to mean any genre of music enjoyed freely by ordinary people out on the streets. The festival began in September 1991 with nine venues and grew to two days in 2000. In 2026, its 35th edition brought together about 870 acts selected through an open call, more than 5,000 performers in all, and drew 730,000 listeners. Volunteers and local residents help run the whole thing.
