About
Rooted in Kochi's famous Yosakoi festival, this event began in 1998 under the motto "Tohoku is one." Dancers hold naruko wooden clappers and perform to music that weaves in local folk songs, so teams from across Tohoku and the rest of Japan each bring their own region's tunes, costumes and choreography. Performances spread across parks and plazas along Sendai's subway lines, including Kotodai Park and Nishikicho Park, and on the final day a parade fills Jozenji-dori Avenue. The 2026 edition marks the twenty-ninth festival, with the theme "Let's ring it together." It goes ahead rain or shine.
