About
The grand festival of the Unama Jizo at Zenchoji Temple in Kitago, Misato, is one of the town's three major festivals. It runs for three days every year, centred on day 24 of the first lunar month, and draws large crowds of worshippers. The Jizo sits at the top of Mt. Tetsujo, and reaching it means climbing 365 stone steps. The image itself is said to be shown only once in 60 years, but the festival comes round every year. Legend says the renowned monk Gyoki carved it, bowing three times for every cut, and the Jizo is trusted to guard against fire and all the misfortunes it brings. Many visitors come for its paper charm, meant to be put up in the kitchen.
