About
On the Saitobaru plateau west of central Saito, this spring festival is timed for when the cherry trees and rapeseed bloom together. In front of the imperial burial mounds, now part of a park, about 2,000 cherry trees and some 300,000 rapeseed plants flower, and pink and yellow under a blue sky make for great photos. The program includes kagura, stage shows, a walking stamp rally and workshops, plus stalls with local produce and regional food. Flower seedlings are given away, and the cherry trees are lit up after dark. The Saitobaru Burial Mounds are a Special Historic Site of Japan and part of a Japan Heritage designation, with more than 300 mounds from the third to the seventh centuries spread across the plateau.
