About
Shiromi Shrine in Saito City holds its grand festival with kagura danced right through the night. Also called Mera Kagura, it is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The grand festival runs for five days, December 12 to 16, and the kagura is offered from the evening of December 14 to the morning of December 15, so be ready to settle in for the long haul. The kagura is said to belong to the Udo school: in the Tenna era (1681–1684), Hamasuna Awaji-no-kami Shigekata of Shiromi served at the training hall on Mount Udo and learned pieces such as Udo Kagura and Udo Kishin, which are still performed today. During the kagura, the neighbouring Saito Ginjo Gakuen is used for parking.
