About
On the first Saturday of every December, Sano Shrine offers kagura that lasts all night. It is designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property under the name "Takaharu no Kanme." After the rites at the shrine, a square near the second torii gate becomes the dance ground, and bold dances with real swords take turns with comic masked dances until the sun comes up the next morning. The kagura is believed to have been performed at least 400 years ago, and Edo-period documents record its list of dances. It used to be held in the ninth month of the old lunar calendar. It is customary for spectators to bring shochu or a small monetary offering.
