About

For two days in winter, Iiyama, a town buried in snow, shows off what snow country is all about. Run by the Iiyama Snow Festival committee, the event centers on Iiyama Castle Ruins Park but spreads across the whole city. Snow sculptures, from towering works to small ones, are built by local people in the bitter cold and dotted around town, so wandering from one to the next is half the fun. When darkness falls, the sculptures are illuminated and the Narasawa Great Tengu performance takes the stage, giving the evening a completely different feel. Food booths serve dishes that warm you up, and a sweets cafe and a stage for local performers run alongside. It is a hands-on way to enjoy snow and meet the people who live with it.
