About

In winter, the area from Nagano Station to Zenkoji Temple and Joyama Park glows with light during this festival. It was launched in 2004 to carry forward the legacy of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and to send a message of peace to the world. After dark, Zenkoji is illuminated by the internationally known lighting designer Motoko Ishii. The other star of the show is the lantern art exhibition: around 800 paper-cut lanterns, each carved with its maker's wishes, trace paths of light through the temple and Joyama Park, and a giant lantern 2.5 meters tall is lit as a prayer for peace. Special live performances and tea gatherings at the temple lodgings take place during the festival, which is run by the Nagano Tomyo Festival executive committee.
