About
When the camellias bloom in winter, festival events spread across the Goto Islands. Goto is a stronghold of wild camellias, celebrated in the saying "Oshima in the east, Goto in the west," and it is the birthplace of the rare Tamanoura variety; camellias have been part of island life for generations. During the festival there are camellia-themed exhibitions, events and tours all over. Guides lead visitors to World Heritage churches and famous camellia trees, geopark guides take groups to places such as the Goto Camellia Forest Park, and you can try dishes cooked with camellia oil, limited-edition lunches, a camellia bonsai show and a kimono walk through the Goto Clan Garden. A discount on packages combining travel and lodging was also offered. A committee based at the Goto City Tourism Association runs the festival.
