About
Started in 1980, Omura's summer festival is unusual in Japan: a joint Nagoshi grand rite held together by the city's Shinto shrines. It marks the midsummer purification that refreshes body and mind for the second half of the year, and seeks to pass on a sense of gratitude to the gods. A fireworks show on the eve gets things going. On the two main days, the lighting of a huge lantern tower in front of JR Omura Station signals the start of local performing arts, dedicatory taiko, children's drumming and mochi scattering. Night-market stalls pack the shopping arcade and Nagoshi Yume-dori, and on the final day residents join a powerful mass dance. Limited-edition goshuin shrine stamps are available during the festival, and free shuttle buses run from Omura Park and other spots.
