About

Obama Onsen in Unzen City holds this festival to match the blooming of its jacaranda trees. Counted among the world's three great flowering trees, the jacaranda is loved as a street tree in South America, Africa, Australia and elsewhere, much as cherry trees are in Japan. It is a subtropical tree that does not like the cold, but the climate of Obama, warmed by the heat of its hot springs, suits it well, and trees planted about 50 years ago have grown large and now signal the arrival of the rainy season. Branches covered in vivid blossoms are well worth seeing, and illuminated at night beside the sea they look magical. The festa is held on a Sunday in June; it is cancelled in rain but goes ahead in light drizzle.
