About

On the eve of its autumn festival, Kamotsuba Shrine in Gose glows with susuki lanterns. Each is a bamboo pole about 4.5 m tall hung with 10 paper lanterns in tiers of 2, 4 and 4 and crowned with a white paper offering, said to look like a stalk of ripe rice. About 30 of them, one from each neighborhood association, assemble at Katsuragi Park and then make their way to the shrine. In the precincts each group sways and hoists its lantern before praying, and the young men's association gives a final rousing display. The offering asks for good harvests, safe households and good health; it is among the largest of its kind in Nara Prefecture and a prefectural intangible folk cultural property. The shrine protects old Gose town and 5 surrounding districts, and the next day a large portable shrine tours the streets.
